I was starting to think my Chrome browser had personal grudges against me. Every time I closed Google Chrome, it kept logging me out of my account, and I’d be back to square one, and had to sign in again every time. It was like Groundhog Day, but instead of reliving the same day, I was reliving the same login screen.

This wasn’t just annoying; it was messing with my workflow. No saved passwords, no autofill, no seamless access to my Gmail or Drive. It was like being thrown back to the dial-up era of the internet.

Naturally, I turned to the internet for help. I scoured Chrome’s community forums and dug through Reddit threads. Surprisingly, there were plenty of people with the same issue, so I wasn’t alone. I tried all the generic solutions mentioned by the Google experts, such as clearing cache and cookies, disabling extensions, and even reinstalling Chrome. Unfortunately, nothing worked.

Here’s what could be causing Chrome to log out

Just as I was about to give up and resign myself to a life of endless logins, I stumbled upon a tiny setting tucked away in Chrome’s privacy menu. And guess what? It was the culprit all along!

The problem, it turns out, lies with On-device site data. This setting controls how Chrome handles website data stored on your computer. For some reason, it got set to “Always delete site data from your device when you close Chrome.” No wonder it kept logging me out. This setting erases all the data of your Chrome. As a result, when you close the tab, it automatically logs out your account from the browser.

Here’s how to fix Chrome keeps logging out bug:

  • Open Chrome settings by clicking the three vertical dots in the top right corner of your browser window, then select Settings.
  • Go to Privacy and Security and click on Site Settings.
  • Find Additional content settings by scrolling down toward the bottom of the page.

  • Click On-device site data

  • Select Allow sites to save data on your device

This will prevent Chrome from wiping your login information every time you close it. And that’s it! Once I changed this setting, my login woes vanished. No more repetitive sign-ins, no more frustration. Just smooth sailing and uninterrupted access to my Google account.

Hopefully, this helps anyone else who’s been battling this frustrating issue. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some serious catching up to do on all the work I couldn’t get done while I was stuck in login limbo.
