MediaTek has emerged as a prominent player in the smartphone processor market. The company offers a wide range of chips in various segments. Their Dimensity series, in particular, has gained significant popularity for its impressive performance and power efficiency. However, this series consists of many processors, ranging from flagship to budget, and it can be challenging for someone unfamiliar with MediaTek’s naming scheme to choose the chipset they need.

One may have to brainstorm on the Internet to choose the perfect MediaTek chipset and still, it can be quite overwhelming as MediaTek processors go through multiple rebrands. For instance, the Dimensity 8050 has been rebranded as Dimensity 1200. While the 8050 chipsets may seem significantly more powerful than the 1200, they offer similar performance. So, this can be confusing.

Here’s a detailed guide to help you understand the naming scheme of MediaTek Dimensity processors. Similar to Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, MediaTek processors can also be categorized into four categories – flagship, premium midrange, midrange, and budget or entry-level. MediaTek flagship chipsets – The Dimensity 9 series

In the top-most tier, MediaTek has flagship processors that compete with the best Snapdragon chipsets offered by Qualcomm. One advantage MediaTek has over Qualcomm is its affordability. MediaTek processors are comparatively cheaper and their performance is on par with the flagship Snapdragon chipsets. For example, the Dimensity 9300 and 9300 Plus are the most powerful processors that compete with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

In terms of Antutu score, the Dimensity 9000 chipset scored approx. a million, while the latest Dimensity 9300 Plus got 2.23 million. In contrast, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 scored an Antutu score of 2.13 million. Over time, MediaTek has significantly improved its performance and heat dissipation.

MediaTek premium midrange chipsets

Those who want performance similar to that of flagship chipsets but are low on budget can check out the premium midrange segment of MediaTek chipsets. They offer better performance than the normal mid-range processors, slightly inclined towards flagship SoCs.

The MediaTek 8000 series, featured in upper mid-range phones, is known for its price-to-performance ratio. Some of the processors in this tier promise better performance than flagship chipsets. For example, the Dimensity 8300 Ultra scored 1.44 million, which is better than the Dimensity 9200 and close to 9200+. The Dimensity 8300 also offers some flagship features like improved AI processing and enhanced camera capabilities.

Note that the flagship series uses the term “Plus” for the overclocked version, while the 8000 series uses “Ultra” for the same.

What differentiates the flagship and midrange chipsets of MediaTek?

While the performance of these processors is more or less the same, there are some differentiating factors such as GPU and process used in manufacturing. Take the latest mid-range and flagship processors, for instance, the 9300+ and 8200 Ultra. The former is built on TSMC’s 4nm (3rd-gen) process, while the latter uses TSMC 4nm (2nd-gen).

Moreover, the 9300+ is equipped with Immortalis-G720 (12-core) GPU, whereas the 8200 Ultra uses Mali-G615 (6-core). MediaTek entry-level or budget chipsets
